GEAR & SET UP
TRAINING GEAR
Eyesight Trainer - shields #1, #2, #3
8 or more agility poles with flags
SET UP
Set up two rows of poles with flags, the longer the better
Allow about 3 yards between the rows of poles
Allow 3 or more yards between each two poles in one row
Poles in both rows may be perfectly aligned or they can be placed at random distance to lower predictability
TRAINING DRILLS
PV19
LAZY BALL SELF PASS
With your Trainer on, keep your head high or tilt your head down slightly and look into the black shield
Gently pass the ball back and forth between your feet
If you find this easy, tilt your head down to block the ball from being seen through your lower periphery. If you do this, you do not need to look into the shield, just follow the ball with your eyes. The shield will provide the necessary obstruction for you to engage both of your eyes properly.
In this way of practicing, you may have to take an extra step when retrieving the ball on each side
As you progress:
Practice additional foot skills while looking into the shield
Practice time: 1-2 minutes
Practice Lenses: #1
PV27
TWO POINT LATERAL SHUFFLE WITH BALL
Choose 2 poles from your set up, at least 3 yards apart
Wear your trainer, head high, look into the shield. Stand behind the poles with both poles to your left
Shuffle and roll the ball to the left until you see the further away pole (the 2nd pole) within your right periphery (you have to pass the pole for it to happen), then reverse the movement
Shuffle and roll the ball to the right until you see the first pole within your left periphery (you have to pass the pole for it to happen), reverse again. Continue for 1 minute
When finished, repeat the drill with the poles behind your back
Practice time: 1 minute with poles in the front and 1 minute with the poles behind your back. Take a break in between if desired
Practice Lenses: #2 and #3
Tips:
Instead of turning around at the end, simply backpedal to the starting point
Selected sports only: If this drill is difficult, or for practice of young players, use a slow ball (slightly deflated) to prevent it from running away.
PV26
LATERAL SHUFFLE WITH BALL
Set up a row of at least 4 poles, each 3 or more yards apart from the next
Wear your Trainer, your head tilted down, look into the shield. Stand to the right side of the set-up (with the poles to your left), facing the poles.
Notice your ball in the lower periphery.
Roll the ball to the left and call out the poles after you pass them, and as you notice them in your right periphery. You can raise your right hand instead.
When you reach the end reverse direction and roll the ball to the right, call the poles as you pass them and notice them in your left periphery.
Repeat at least 3 times, then continue with your back towards the poles.
Stay aware of the ball and the poles at all times.
As you progress:
Pay attention to your complete surroundings. Notice that everything around you moves in the direction opposite to your own movement.
Randomize the distance between any two poles to decrease predictability.
Practice time: 3 sets facing forward, 3 sets with your back turned towards the poles
Practice Lenses: #1 and #2
Tips and Watchouts:
Increase the number of poles for a more continuous practice.
PV22
FLAGGED POLES ALLEY WITH BALL
With your Trainer on, stand between 2 rows of poles, head high or slightly tilted down, look straight forward into the shield
Walk or jog forward between the rows of poles moving a ball (use your lower periphery to stay in touch with the ball)
Call out each pole as soon as you see it in your periphery. Raise your hand instead of the voice signal if preferred
When you reach the end, turn around and repeat, calling out the poles as you see them.
As you progress:
Increase the distance between the left and right rows of poles to expand your peripheral awareness
Change the poles placement from session to session, make the left and right rows uneven to eliminate predictability
Practice time: 2-3 minutes / 3+ sets
Practice Lenses: #2 and #3
Watchouts
Do not peek through the sides
Keep a few feet of distance from the poles, stop and adjust as needed
